GRANT

  • Born Hiram Ulysses Grant on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio

  • Graduated from West Point on July 1, 1843

  • Served with the army as a 2nd Lt. in the War with Mexico, 1845-1848

  • Married Julia Boggs Dent in 1848 and had 4 children, Fred, Ulysses Jr., Nellie, and Jesse

  • Had an extremely strong marriage and was a devoted husband and father

  • Loved horses all of his life and was considered to be the best equestrian in the army

  • Appointed by a special act of Congress to Lt. General in 1864, first Lt. General since George Washington

  • Appointed by a special act of Congress to full "Four Star" General in 1866

  • Was president from 1869-1877

  • Died July 23, 1885 from throat cancer in Mt. McGregor, N.Y.
